Privacy Policy

The effective date of this Policy is November 20, 2008.

SUMMARY

This web site is owned by the Craft & Hobby Association (“CHA”).  At CHA, our goal is to provide a venue where crafters can share projects and ideas, learn and be inspired.  To help keep Craftplace a friendly and safe place, it’s important to us that you understand what information we collect, how we protect it, and how we use it — and to provide clear instructions if you choose to request changes in how we communicate with you.

The Privacy Policy applies to you whether you are a "Visitor," which means that you simply browse the Craftplace web site, or a "Member," which means that you have registered with Craftplace.org.  The term "User" refers to a either a Visitor or a Member.

To ensure that your communications are properly routed, we ask that you identify the CHA web site relevant to your inquiry when contacting us.  If you would like to receive a response, please be sure to include sufficient information to enable us to contact you (such as an email or postal address).

IMPORTANT

Please be aware that the user name you select will be shown publicly with every contributed post to the web site.  Please protect your own identity.  Please note that any information you include in a message you post to any forum, craft project, other user, or other public posting area is available to anyone with Internet access.  If you don’t want people to know your e-mail address, for example, don’t include it in any message you post publicly.  Please be extremely careful when disclosing any information in forums, message boards, via the message me function and other public posting areas.  CHA is not responsible for the use by others of the information that you disclose in forums, message boards, via the message me function and other public posting areas.

INFORMATION WE COLLECT

Information: Collection & Usage

When you visit Craftplace you provide us with two types of information: personal information you knowingly choose to disclose that is collected by us and web site use information collected by us as you interact with our web site.

  1. We collect personal information (such as your name, your e-mail address, home address and zip code) when you register with the web site and when you use our services, and we may collect personal information when you enter promotions, sweepstakes, give-aways, or other hosted contests.  
  2. When you register, we may ask for information such as your name, account password, email address, date of birth, gender, zip code, occupation, industry, and personal interests.  When you register with Craftplace and sign in to our service, you are not anonymous to us.
  3. We may collect information about your activity on craftplace and with some of our partners.
  4. We may use personal information for the purposes described in the “HOW WE MAY SHARE YOUR INFORMATION” section below, as well as for:

    1. Auditing, research, and analysis to maintain, protect, and improve our services;
    2. Ensuring the technical functioning of our network;
    3. Contacting you;
    4. Conducting research; and
    5. Provide anonymous reporting for partners.



  6. We automatically receive and record information on our server logs, including your IP address, and browser type.  These server logs may also include your browser language and the date and time of your request.
  7. Cookies:  We store certain information from your browser using "cookies."  A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's computer tied to information about the user.
    1. When you visit the web site, we may set and access cookies on your computer.  We use session ID cookies to confirm that users are logged in.  These cookies terminate once the user closes the browser.  By default, we use a persistent cookie that stores your login ID (but not your password) to make it easier for you to login when you come back to Craftplace;
    2. If your browser is set to refuse all cookies, some features of our site may not function properly;
    3. We use cookies to improve the quality of our services by storing user preferences and tracking user trends;
    4. You can turn cookies off if you wish, but any website features that rely on them will be disabled;
  8. When you send email or other communication to us, we may retain those communications in order to process your inquiries, respond to your requests, and improve our services.
  9. If you choose to use our share craft project service to share a project with a friend, we will ask you for information needed to send the invitation, such as your friend's email address. We will automatically send your friend a one-time email with a link to the project you selected.  CHA does not store this information.
  10. We may present links in a format that enables us to track when the links are followed.  We may use this information to improve the quality and content of our content and advertising.
  11. Our partners and third party Internet sites have separate privacy and data collection practices which are independent of us.  We have no responsibility or liability for these independent policies or the actions of our partners and of third parties.  If you click on a banner ad or other third party link on our website, you will be taken to the site sponsoring that link and CHA has no responsibility or liability for the privacy policies of those sites.

Email address and postal address

If at any time you provide us with your email address, we collect that information.  Areas in which we may collect your email address include but are not limited to setting up your user profile, discussion boards; emails you send us; and interactive forms.  You may receive informational emails from us related to any user accounts you have set up with us, as well as administrative notices regarding the operation of the web site.
If you supply us with your postal address online, you may receive periodic mailings from us and selected partners with information on new products and services.
Finally, we keep any information volunteered by the consumer, such as survey information and/or site registrations, both in aggregate and personally identifiable ways.

HOW WE MAY SHARE YOUR INFORMATION

Disclosure and Use of Personal Information


CHA processes personal information only for the purposes for which it was collected and in accordance with this policy or any other applicable service-specific privacy notice.  We retain the right to review our data collection, storage, and processing practices to ensure that we only collect, store, and process the personal information needed to provide or improve our services.  We take reasonable steps to ensure that the personal information we process is accurate, complete, and current, but it is incumbent upon our users to update and/or correct their personal information whenever necessary.
Disclosing Personal Information:

  1. We do not rent, sell, or share personal information about you with other people or companies except when we have your permission.
  2. Notwithstanding the above, if we have a good faith belief that access, use, preservation or disclosure of such information is reasonably necessary, we may share your personal information under the following circumstances:

       

    1. To satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process, or enforceable governmental request (which may include, but is not limited to, responding to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process, or establishing or exercising our legal rights or defending against legal claims);
    2. To enforce applicable Terms of Service, including investigation of potential violations thereof; 
    3. To detect, prevent, investigate, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues; or 
    4. To protect against imminent harm to the rights, property or safety of CHA, its Members and users of its web site, or the public, as required or permitted by law, and to protect against potential threats to the physical safety of another person.

     

  3. CHA may share information in your profile without identifying you as an individual to third parties.
  4. CHA may share certain pieces of aggregated, non-personal information with third parties (such as number of users who click on a particular link), but that information shall not identify you individually.

 

California Privacy Rights
Pursuant to California Civil Code Section 1798.83, CHA web site users who are California residents can request certain information about the sharing of their own personal information with third parties for direct marketing purposes during the past year.  California residents can request this disclosure by sending a request to the Craft & Hobby Association, Attention: Craftplace Privacy, 319 East 54th Street, Elmwood Park, NJ 07407 or by email to craftplace@craftandhobby.org.  To help us process your request, please provide sufficient information to allow us to identify you in our records and confirm that you are a California resident.

OPT OUT PROCEDURES
If you do not wish to receive promotional emails from us, please let us know by using the opt-out response device that can be found at the bottom of every email we deliver or by emailing us at craftplace@craftandhobby.org.  To help us process your request, please include sufficient information for us to identify you in our records (your email address will suffice) and identify the CHA web site you have used and from whose mailing lists you wish to be removed.  If you wish to be removed from all CHA emailing lists, please so indicate in your request.  Please allow 10 business days for us to process your request.
Note that, although you can opt not to receive promotional emails, CHA retains the right to send registered users of its web sites informational email messages about the user’s account or administrative notices regarding the site, as permitted under the CAN-SPAM Act (15 U.S.C. §7701 et seq.).

If you do not wish for us to share your information with our selected partners, please let us know by sending your request to: Craft & Hobby Association, Attention: Craftplace, 319 East 54th Street, Elmwood Park, NJ 07407 or by email to craftplace@craftandhobby.org.  To help us process your request, please include sufficient information to allow us to identify you in our records (at a minimum, we will need your postal address to remove you from a mailing list, or your email to remove you from an email list) and identify the CHA partner promotions removal in your request.  Please allow a minimum of 10 business days for us to process your request.

CHILDREN UNDER AGE 14

CHA does not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 14 or knowingly allow such persons to register to use CHA’s website.  If you are under 14, please do not attempt to register with Craftplace or send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address.  No one under age 14 may provide any personal information to or on Craftplace.  In the event that we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 14, we will delete that information as quickly as possible.  If you believe that we might have any information from or about a child under 14, please contact us at craftplace@craftandhobby.org.

CHILDREN BETWEEN AGES 14 & 18

We recommend that minors ages 14 and up ask their parent or legal guardian for permission before sending any information about themselves to anyone over the Internet.

ANALYTICS

To determine how many users visit our site and to better understand the areas of greatest interest to our users, we have relationships with other companies that compile this information for us.  As a result of your visit to our site, web analytics companies may collect information such as your domain type, your IP address and clickstream information.

SECURITY


We have security measures in place in our physical facilities to protect against the loss, misuse or alteration of information that we have collected from you at our site.  We require users to identify themselves via a unique e-mail address and password to access their personal information.
Limiting Employee Access to Information
CHA limits employee access to personally identifiable information to those with a business reason for knowing such information.

The Craftplace web site contains links to other websites.  CHA is not responsible for the privacy policies and/or practices of other websites.  When linking to another site you should read the privacy policy stated on that site.  This Privacy Policy only governs information collected on the Craftplace web site by CHA.

ASSIGNMENT

In the event that all or part of CHA’s assets or sold or acquired by another party, or in the event of a merger, you grant CHA the right to assign the information collected from you via the web site in connection with such a transfer of assets or merger.

CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

From time to time, we may use user information for new, unanticipated uses not previously disclosed in our privacy notice.  If our information practices change at some time in the future, we will post the policy changes to our web site.  We will also provide you with the ability to opt out of these new uses.
