Step 1: For best results, please read all instructions before beginning project. Refer to photo for color and design placement.
Step 2: Cut a 31" square from fleece, using rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler.
Step 3: Cut four 1½" x 45" strips from rust fabric. Cut four 7" x 45" strips from light brown fabric.
Step 4: Tear four 4" wide strips from gingham. Fray edges, pulling threads from both sides until strips measure 3½" wide.
Step 5: Lay fleece onto work surface. Lay gingham strips across fleece, spacing equally. Pin. Sew both sides of each strip ¼" in from frayed edges. Trim ends even with fleece.
Step 6: Pin a rust fabric strip along one side of fleece, right sides together. Sew, using a ¼" seam. Sew a strip along opposite side. Iron seams toward fabric. Trim ends. Repeat procedure to sew a strip to each remaining side. Trim ends.
Step 7: Pin a light brown fabric strip, onto each of first two sewn rust strips, right sides together. Sew. Trim ends. Iron seam toward brown fabric. Measure 3" from seam. Fold fabric to back at measurement. Iron into place. Fold cut edge under to align with stitch line. Iron into place, forming a finished edge on two sides. Pin along seam and ends to prevent shifting.
Step 8: Fold one end of brown strip 1" to inside. Align with folded edge, right sides together. Pin. Sew strip along remaining side to 5" from end. Fold fabric end to align with folded end on quilt. Trim to 1" and sew into place. Repeat procedure to finish remaining edge. Finish opposite sides in same manner.
Step 9: Making sure brown edges are securely pinned to rust, stitch in the ditch between rust and brown fabrics on entire front of quilt.
Step 10: Sew ends and along edges on back by hand.
Step 11: Apply a Leopard Heart Appliqué at each corner and two spaced evenly along each edge, following manufacturer’s instructions and using Mini Fashion Iron.
Step 12: Cut apart hand stencil. Squeeze a puddle of Yellow onto foil. Position hands thumbs toward center, centering between hearts. Run a fingernail along inside edges to ensure a tight seal. Use masking tape to extend edges of stencil. Tap flat end of sponge into paint. Tap excess paint onto foil. Pounce paint into stencil, applying a thin even coat. Blow dry. Apply another thin, even coat. Remove stencil. Carefully reposition stencil. Repeat procedure to stencil remaining hands around edge. Let dry.
Step 13: Loosely cut six pieces from both rust and brown fabrics. Position an Iron-On Appliqué in center of each piece. Place a paper towel over appliqué. Iron, following manufacturer’s instructions. Turn fabric over. Iron again.
Step 14: Each patch is 4½" wide. Place ruler’s 2¼" inch mark in center of appliqué design. Mark 4 ½" width. Measure ¾" from top and bottom of each appliqué. Use chalk pencil to lightly draw connecting lines.
Step 15: Cut along chalk line, using pinking shears. Pin patches in place.
Step 16: Thread needle with 6 strands of floss. Sew each patch into place, using an even basting stitch.
Step 17: Start flow of paint on a paper towel using an even pressure on bottle for a smooth line. Write animal names onto gingham between patches, using Black. Use paper towels to keep tip of bottle clean as you work. Let dry.
Step 18: Wait 72 hours to wash. Machine wash warm on gentle cycle. Do not use harsh detergents or bleach. Remove promptly and line dry. Do not dry clean.
